Addenda Corporation Introduces a New Battery Additive – addiBatt™ PN-20 Indianapolis

May 1, 2013

AddiBatt™ PN-20 is a multi-functional battery paste “seed” additive that improves both the curing and formation of the lead acid battery positive plate. During paste mixing and curing, this multiaxial product promotes the formation of a unique tetrabasic crystal structure in the positive active material (PAM). Tetrabasic “seeding” is known to reduce curing times, improve the uniformity of the PAM and extend the battery cycle life. During the battery formation process, the presence of addiBatt™ PN-20 increases the initial capacity of the battery by increasing the ratio of β-PbO2 to α-PbO2. Increasing the β-PbO2 content can reduce the formation energy costs required to reach full capacity.

Multiaxial “seed” crystals grow in a three dimensional pattern during the battery curing process. By growing in all directions, not just one, they create an interlocking growth pattern that improves the integrity and strength of the battery grid while promoting a “tetrabasic” crystal structure. Addenda is a leading manufacturer of additives for the battery, rubber, plastics and chemical industries. Additives include flame retardants and smoke suppressants for plastic materials, additives for batteries that improve performance and reduce manufacturing costs and additives that enhance the properties of rubber materials.

“The introduction of addiBatt™ PN-20 adds yet another unique additive for improving the lead acid battery,” stated Gary R. Mitchener, President of Addenda.

ALABC Welcomes Addenda Corporation into Membership

Battery Additives Manufacturer Becomes Consortium’s 68th Member

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (January 26, 2012) – The Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium picked up another valuable partner company when it announced that Addenda Corporation, a leading producer of battery additives, would be joining the research group’s membership roster. Addenda becomes the ALABC’s 68th member and a key partner in the consortium’s mission to advance the capabilities of lead-acid and lead carbon batteries.

Since its incorporation in 1999, Addenda has slowly developed into a worldwide leader in manufacturing high-quality and cost-effective additives for a variety of markets, especially enhanced lead-acid batteries. In fact, the success of its AddiBatt-Tetra line of products (tetrabasic lead sulfate) in enhancing the performance, prolonging the life, and reducing the manufacturing costs of lead-acid batteries is a key reason for its partnership with the ALABC.

“With the success of some of our battery additives, we believe this is an opportune time to join the ALABC and take an active role in helping to improve the performance of lead-acid batteries,” said Addenda president Gary Mitchener. “In addition, many of our customers and business partners also have membership in the ALABC, and that can only solidify our relationships with these companies.”

While the company serves a variety of manufacturing sectors, Addenda continues to remain most active in partnering with the lead-acid battery industry. Mitchener’s involvement in the industry spans over 40 years, and his partnerships with organizations such as Battery Council International (BCI) have helped position his company as an experienced supplier for the industry.

“We are proud to have Addenda become a part of our membership,” said ALABC President Pat Moseley. “Their expertise in the field of battery additives makes them an invaluable partner at a time when we are working to take some major steps toward optimizing lead-acid technology for a variety of markets.”

Based in Indianapolis, Addenda is also keeping up with industry demand by branching out into other international markets. The company recently formed a partnership in China and opened an office in Hong Kong in response to an increased demand for their products in the Asian battery sector. Addenda Announces Products for the Battery Industry

INDIANAPOLIS/ January 2, 2003/ – Addenda Corporation, Indianapolis, Indiana, announced the availability of samples of various lead sulfate products for use in lead-acid battery manufacturing. Addenda, a leading manufacturer of plastic additives, will market the battery additives under the addiBatt™ trade name.

“There has been a growing interest over the past decade for new paste materials to enhance battery performance,” said Addenda president, Gary R. Mitchener. “Some of the research has involved using basic lead sulfate chemicals as the starting material for grid pasting rather than the traditional lead oxide (“leady oxide”).”

The new products of interest are; tetrabasic lead sulfate, tribasic lead sulfate and monobasic lead sulfate. Some suggested benefits cited in literature over the last decade include:

  • Mechanical strength properties of the pasted grid.
  • Reduced grid pasting/formation costs
  • Good adhesion to the positive plate
  • Extended battery life
  • Excellent capacity per gram
  • Increase of specific energy
  • Good strength in combination with high power density, porosity and surface area.

Addenda Corporation has already been manufacturing two of these products for the plastics industry and has developed technology using automated techniques that can result in a variety of particle sizes and purities tailored to meet the requirements of the battery market.

Addenda Announces Alliance with OMNI Oxide

April 20th, 1999 8:30am INDIANAPOLIS/ April 20, 1999/ – OMNI Oxide LLC and Addenda Corporation, today announced an agreement on a strategic alliance. OMNI is a leading North American producer of lead oxides for the battery and electronic glass industries and has four QS9000 certified plants in the United States.

Addenda is a manufacturer of polymer additives – heat stabilizers and lubricants – which includes some products requiring high quality lead oxide as a raw material. Heat stabilizers are necessary additives used to protect polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from degradation and maintain good electrical properties in wire and cable insulation and jacketing.

“We are fortunate to have a committed supply relationship established with an industry leader that shares our belief in providing improving value to customers,” stated Gary R. Mitchener, President of Addenda. “We will continue to seek out and evaluate new opportunities that enhance our offerings to customers and the future of Addenda.”

OMNI and Addenda will share various resources at a production facility in Brazil, Indiana and headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. “There is a natural fit and overlap in certain areas of our businesses and it makes sense to cooperate and share certain resources,” said Greg Stevens, President and CEO of OMNI Oxide LLC.
